Cinquedea Shortsword

  • Dated: early 16th century
  • Culture: Italian
  • Measurements: blade length 57cm (22 1/2 inches)

The sword has a broad flat tapering blade formed with a pair of near full-length shallow fullers and a slender central flat on each face and decorated on each side with pairs of engraved roundels including the figure of Marcus Curtius leaping into the abyss.

The forte us engraved on the respective faces with a panel of scrolling foliage above the Judgement of Paris and a classical triumph. The panels are divided by the central slender flat engraved with the inscription ‘Virtus Omnia Vincit’ (Virtue Conquers All) on one side and ‘In Domino Confido’ (In God I trust) on the other. The forte decoration has traces of original gilding.

The iron hilt comprising arched quillons is engraved with classical profile roundels flanked together by a Pegasus to either side and scrolling renaissance foliage. The shaped tang is enclosed by a pair of gilt panels chased with the inscription ‘Nunquam Potest Non’ and ‘Esse Virtuti Locus’ (there must ever be a place for virtue).

The grip has on each side a shaped ivory panel over a horn fillet (both cracked and chipped, the ivory and horn perhaps later), the former being engraved with a laurel swag, pierced with four holes of differing size and each fitted with a brass collar, and three retaining their tracery rondels on each side (one missing).

The inscription around the tang is a quotation from Lucius Annaeus Seneca’s Medea. The form of the blade is similar to a cinquedea preserved in the Musée de l’ Armée, Paris (inv. no. MA J 34). For related examples see L. G. Boccia & E. T. Coelho 1975, nos. 190-238 and C. Blair 1966.

How to Train Your Dragon 2: Valka [ISFP]

funkymbtifiction:

image

Introverted Feeling (Fi): Valka has her own moral compass that differs from the Viking society around her. Before being abducted by Cloudjumper, she tried to convince the people of Berk not to kill dragons, being convinced that a peaceful solution is possible. She prefers to live in peace with the dragons than to return to Berk, believing that his is best for her family and herself. She is convinced that there is no use in talking to Drago, seeing him and the dragons in a black/white moral. Saving dragons from trappers and hunters is her self-proclaimed mission – she suffers deeply with each wounded dragon. Valka isn’t very good at expressing her feelings, but she is very emotional on the inside and needs a lot of space. Stoick knows this, so he doesn’t pressure her into coming back to Berk, but instead appeals to her sensitive side and their shared memories.

image

Extroverted Sensing (Se): Valka is just as talented at riding dragons as her son. Both enjoy the thrill of flying and are capable of spectacular air acrobatics. Whereas Hiccup has a knack for inventing new gear and technology, Valka has a more organic, hands-on approach, having learned everything about the behavior of dragons from experience and interaction with them.

image

Introverted Intuition (Ni): A spiritual bond connects her to the dragons, feeling that they aren’t evil, even when they used to attack Berk. She knows she will be happier living with the dragons than living in Berk. When she meets Hiccup she has an immediate connection with him, sensing that he is just like her. She proposes at once to roam the skies with him, chartering and discovering new lands and new dragons, seeing a future together with her son. She’s also right in her prediction about Drago, knowing that he won’t change.

image

Extroverted Thinking (Te): Valka is hesitant to do things if they don’t coincide with her emotional truth or personal beliefs (Fi). She becomes defensive and insecure when first encountering Stoick after all those years and is reluctant at first to return to Berk. Once she’s made up her mind though, her Se-Te delivers excellent execution, knowing what to do in order to protect her family and the dragons.
